Root Canal Treatment

Endodontic treatment that removes infection from inside a tooth so the tooth itself can be kept.

Overview

Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can let bacteria reach it, which can cause pain, swelling or an abscess.

Root canal treatment cleans out the infected pulp, disinfects and seals the canals, and protects the tooth so you can keep it rather than lose it.

What it can include

  • Root canal therapy
  • Re-root canal therapy (retreatment)
  • Apicoectomy
  • Pulpotomy and pulpectomy for children
  • A filling or crown afterwards to protect the tooth

Step by step

What to expect.

Every mouth is different, and your dentist will explain the steps for your own treatment.

  1. Diagnosis

An examination and X-ray to find the source of the problem and confirm that the tooth can be saved.

  2. Cleaning

Under local anaesthetic, the infected pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned and shaped.

  3. Sealing

The canals are filled and sealed. This can take one visit or several.

  4. Protecting

A filling or crown restores the tooth so it can be used normally again.

Common questions about root canal treatment

Does root canal treatment hurt?

The treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, and most patients find it similar to having a filling. It is common for the tooth to feel tender for a few days afterwards. We will tell you how to manage that.

Will I need a crown afterwards?

Back teeth often need a crown because they take heavy biting forces and can be weakened by decay. The dentist will advise based on how much tooth remains.

Is it better to just remove the tooth?

Keeping your own tooth is usually preferable where it can be saved. A missing tooth can affect chewing and lead neighbouring teeth to drift. Where a tooth cannot be saved, we will discuss replacement options.
