Dental Implants
A fixed replacement for one or more missing teeth, anchored in the jaw like a natural root.
Overview
A dental implant is a small post, usually titanium, placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing. Once the bone has healed around it, the implant supports a crown, a bridge or a denture.
At Tafodent, an implant is a two-part job: the surgical placement and the tooth that sits on top. Our oral and maxillofacial surgeon and our prosthodontist both work in the practice, so both parts can be planned in one place.
What it can include
Implants
- Single-tooth implants
- Implant-supported bridges
- All-on-4 full-mouth implants
- Snap-in implant dentures
- Implant-supported dentures
Planning & restoration
- Dental implant restorations (crown, bridge or denture on the implant)
- Socket preservation after an extraction
- Ridge augmentation and bone regeneration, where needed
Step by step
What to expect.
The steps for a single missing tooth. Replacing several teeth follows similar stages, planned around your case. Every mouth is different, and your dentist will explain the steps for your own treatment.
Examination
A thorough examination of your mouth: the space next to and opposite the missing tooth, and the health and shape of your gum and bone.
X-rays and 3D scan
X-rays and a CBCT (3D) scan show the bone in detail, so the implant can be planned precisely.
Bone building, if needed
If there is not enough bone around the gap, a ridge augmentation (bone graft) is done first, and the implant is planned after a few months of healing.
Implant placement
When there is enough healthy bone, an implant of the right size is placed under local anaesthetic.
Temporary tooth
If needed, a temporary tooth fills the gap for appearance and stops the neighbouring and opposing teeth from moving. It is removed at the next stage, after 3 to 6 months of healing.
Healing abutment
A healing abutment is fitted for about a week so the gum forms a healthy, natural shape around the implant.
Digital scan
Once the gum has healed well, a digital intraoral scan is taken and sent to the lab to make your crown.
Trial fitting
If necessary, the crown is tried in first to check the fit, your bite and how it looks.
Your final crown
The final crown (cap) is fixed in place, followed by regular reviews to look after the implant.

Common questions about dental implants
Is everyone suitable for a dental implant?
Not always. Gum health, the amount of bone, smoking and some medical conditions all play a part. The examination tells us whether an implant is a good option for you, or whether something else would serve you better.
How long does the whole process take?
When there is enough healthy bone, the implant usually heals for 3 to 6 months before the final crown is made. If a bone graft is needed first, allow a few more months of healing before the implant is placed. You will get a timeline for your own case during planning.
How much does a dental implant cost?
The cost depends on how many implants you need, the type of tooth placed on top and any additional procedures. We give you the cost of your plan after the examination, before treatment begins.
