Fillings, Inlays & Onlays

Tooth-coloured fillings, inlays and onlays that repair decayed or damaged teeth while keeping as much natural tooth as possible.

Overview

When decay or a small fracture damages a tooth, a restoration rebuilds it so you can bite and chew comfortably again.

Small areas are usually repaired with a tooth-coloured composite filling. Larger repairs on back teeth may need an inlay or onlay: a custom-made piece that fits precisely into or over the tooth.

Step by step

What to expect.

Every mouth is different, and your dentist will explain the steps for your own treatment.

  1. Check

The dentist examines the tooth and may take an X-ray to see how far the decay goes.

  2. Prepare

Under local anaesthetic if needed, the decay is removed and the tooth cleaned.

  3. Restore

A filling is placed and shaped, or an impression is taken for an inlay or onlay.

  4. Check the bite

The restoration is polished and adjusted so your bite feels natural.

Common questions about fillings, inlays & onlays

What is the difference between a filling and an inlay or onlay?

A filling is placed and shaped directly in the tooth in one visit. An inlay or onlay is made to measure, then bonded in place, and is often used for larger repairs on back teeth.

Should I replace my old silver fillings?

Not necessarily. Fillings that are intact and sealing well can usually be left. We will check them and advise if any are cracked, leaking or causing problems.
