Sedation Dentistry

Sedation options for nervous patients and longer procedures, from nitrous oxide to general anaesthesia where appropriate.

Overview

Feeling anxious about the dentist is very common. Sometimes talking it through and taking things at your pace is enough. For some people and some procedures, sedation can make treatment much easier.

Whether sedation is suitable depends on your health, the treatment you need and your preferences. We will assess you carefully and explain the options, the preparation and the aftercare before anything is booked.

What it can include

  • Nitrous oxide sedation
  • Oral conscious sedation
  • IV sedation
  • General anaesthesia

Step by step

What to expect.

Every mouth is different, and your dentist will explain the steps for your own treatment.

  1. Talk

Tell us what worries you. We review your medical history and the treatment you need.

  2. Choose

We explain which options are suitable for you, and the preparation each one needs.

  3. Treatment

You are monitored throughout, by a team trained for the type of sedation used.

  4. Recovery

With most sedation you will need someone to take you home. We give you clear aftercare instructions.

Common questions about sedation dentistry

Will I be asleep?

With nitrous oxide, oral or IV sedation you stay conscious but relaxed and may remember little afterwards. Only general anaesthesia puts you fully to sleep.

Is sedation safe?

Sedation is widely used and is safe for most people when it is carried out with proper assessment and monitoring. It is not suitable for everyone, so we check your health first and will explain any risks.
