Preventive Dentistry

Cleaning, fluoride, sealants, screenings and custom guards that protect your teeth, gums and jaw joints.

Overview

Most tooth decay and gum disease can be prevented, or caught while it is still small and simple to treat. Preventive dentistry is everything we do to keep it that way.

It also covers problems that are not about cavities at all: grinding your teeth at night, jaw-joint pain, snoring, and protecting your teeth during sport.

What it can include

  • Oral cancer screening
  • Periodontal (gum disease) exam
  • TMJ exam
  • Occlusal (bite) exam

Protecting teeth

  • Professional cleaning
  • Fluoride treatments
  • Anti-cavity treatments for adults and children
  • Dental sealants
  • Oral hygiene and patient education
  • Breath treatment (halitosis)

  • Sports mouth guards
  • Snore guards
  • Sleep apnea therapy
  • TMJ/TMD therapy

Step by step

What to expect.

Every mouth is different, and your dentist will explain the steps for your own treatment.

  1. Check-up

An examination of your teeth, gums, bite and jaw joints, with a screening for anything unusual in the mouth.

  2. Cleaning

Plaque and tartar are removed and your teeth are polished.

  3. Protection

Fluoride, sealants or a custom guard if you need one, explained before anything is done.

  4. Your routine

Practical advice on brushing, cleaning between teeth and diet, and when to come back.

Common questions about preventive dentistry

Do I need a night guard?

If you grind or clench your teeth, a custom night guard can protect them from wear and ease the load on your jaw. The dentist will look for signs of grinding at your check-up and advise whether one would help.

Can a dentist help with snoring or sleep apnea?

Some people benefit from a custom oral appliance that holds the jaw forward during sleep. Sleep apnea should be diagnosed by a doctor, and we will work alongside your doctor if an appliance is suitable for you.

Are sealants only for children?

They are most often used on children’s back teeth, but adults with deep grooves in their teeth can benefit too.
